They were archers with a bunch of monsters moving towards thing -
that's quite shocking. As it says, they weren't happy with the lack of
infantry.

I just thought - when you gathered your men, did it tell you "6 men
were nowhere to be found" (or words to that effect)? Did you first
notice the missing men before or after gathering them?
