To end this debate - and someone please put it up on the Wiki:
BM is modeled strongly after medieval Europe, although not to any
specific time period. Many eras are mixed, and whatever I consider most
interesting in any of them put into the game. Democracy, republic, etc.
are definitely government systems from the very end of the middle ages,
if not from even later, while cannons (invented long before democracy)
aren't. The Theocracy is not even from Europe as I don't know any actual
examples of one (well, the Papal states during late italian times maybe,
but that goes towards the Renaissance more than the Middle Ages).
So there is your answer: BM is very similar to feudal medieval Europe,
no specific time period, and not even very authentic as I've taken
liberties everywhere I thought it makes for a more interesting game.
