I really, really like that idea...even though I'm not certain it's  
the best of ideas ;-)

First, the practical: how would it work?  Would the money for the  
oath come out of their Ruler/Banker/Judge/General share?  Or just out  
of their total tax share?
Second, the RP: fantastic!  I have been of the opinion for some time  
that at the very least the Ruler ought to be able to really have  
knights of his own--knights by choice, not by default, and have it  
actually mean something.  These are the people who would support the  
Ruler even against a rebellion or secession by his own Dukes--people  
loyal to the realm first.
Third, the milieu: not exactly period, is it?  Oaths would have been  
specifically between lords and knights, or lords and higher lords,  
wouldn't they?
