Pursuant to a conversation on IRC, I've come up with my own variant
of this suggestion:

Rather than make it dependent on family wealth, make it a relatively
constant value across all families. *However,* it should vary based
on the morale, population, and production of the family's home region.

The theory:
Every noble family, no matter how poor they might be monetarily, will
still have their tract of land, which they can rent, farm, etc. That
will allow them to make money at a reasonably constant rate, given
good conditions. We can assume that noble families are pretty
resourceful, so that someone in the mountains might sell timber, or
offer guide services, and someone in badlands might own the rights to
some gem/mineral deposits. That way, no one is penalized for the
luck of the draw in where their family lands are.

The practice:
This will give people a real connection to their family home. Not
only will they have an incentive beyond mere RP to keep people from
looting it, or fighting lots of battles there, it will be a reminder
to them that their home is there, still doing something good for
them. It will give people a serious reason to push for peace, if
their home is a disputed region getting fought over, or looted time
and again. It will make people care about the NPCs--and realize that
not all NPCs are peasants.
