The Holy Roman Empire was for the most part a huge alliance. A bunch of
Germanic Tribes allied to defeat the Roman Empire (please correct me if
I'm wrong). Wasn't the Ottoman Empire similar? The Christian realms
that fought in the crusades (I thought this was separate entities that
sent armies, but again correct me if I'm wrong, I didn't study mid-evil
alliances in college so I may be wrong). If you had a similar enemy
generally you would ally to fight against them, the whole "the enemy of
my enemy is my friend" thing.
