It might also keep the General and/or Rulers closer to where the time 
sensitive action is taking place, at the fronts as opposed to the 
furthest reaches of the fronts.  And further it would make things like 
rebellions interesting, for other realms may not hear about it for some 
time.  Or the election of some far off realm.

However, IRC/IM does destroy most of that magic.
