How about stress?

How about not being (or not feeling oneself) cut out for the  
diplomatic life?

How about wanting to serve the Kingdom *and* the King--the Kingdom by  
taking up the Regency while the King is indisposed?

How about a loyalty specifically to the Duchy you were Duke of?

Though there are surely plenty of reasons to want to be King, there  
are also plenty of perfectly good IC reasons to *not* want to remain  
King.  It can be very, very hard to reconcile these in RP with a  
demand that the old King *not* just get re-elected.
