In any case, I can personally testify that you will not always be  
reviled for founding a religion.  Not only did Anton not get banned,  
everyone was quite supportive of his career change--and 15 people  
from his realm joined his religion (not including himself) just since  
Tuesday.  And it's not one of those religions whose sole purpose is  
to support the realm, either...

So yeah, I suppose if you're in one of those places who think that  
doing *anything* other than recruiting your unit and going to the  
front is treason, you'll probably be banned for such a flagrant waste  
of money as founding a religion.  But if I were you, I would regard  
this as a bonus.
