The unrealism of being removed from positions so easilly was causing
more trouble than it was worth, so I guess this is a good change.

That would be good. How about simply using rebellions? Make a
rebellion much easier if the ruler isn't there to fight it? The
ruler's supporters would still try and stop you, but without the ruler
present, it would be much harder (As it's all done by battles, I'm not
sure how you'd make it easier for the rebels to win - prehaps
something involving the militia. I'm not sure what militia do in
normal rebellions, so I can't suggest anything very precise.)
I think the best thing about this change is with region lords - now
once appointed there is no way to lose the position except by being
stripped of all titles, which (combined with the new tax system) makes
lords much more powerful.
