The code looks at your unit. If it is not retreated or scattered, it 
fights in a battle, only without it's troop leader. It was recently 
asked a couple of weeks ago (only, it was for lightly wounded and not 
seriously) though I don't remember Tom's reply to why the sword skill 
gain was there. If you want I'll look into my archives
